Signature School

AP World History

Welcome to Advanced Placement World History!

I am looking forward to getting to know each of you this year as we discuss major themes, traditions, ideas, and exchanges in human history.  The “history of the world” a BIG subject, so I am sure you will find something between 8,000 BCE and the present that will fascinate you!

As your first AP class, APWH is an important “next step” in your career at Signature School.  Your studies in sophomore English and AP World History will work together to develop the analytical, reasoning, communication, geography, and study skills necessary for success not only in higher level Signature classes, but also in other AP, IB, and eventual college courses.

APWH is a rigorous college level survey course.  You will think analytically as we investigate our past, define world traditions, interpret global encounters, and seek strategies for our future.   Strong reading, writing, and analytical skills are essential for success in this class.  All students will increase their study and communication skills this year, but motivated students with a good solid work ethic, a willingness to participate in class discussion, and good time management skills will excel.

A typical class combines discussion, lecture, and a group activity or in-class writing assignment.   PBS video snippets or educational websites bring a visual component to our investigations, while  analysis of primary documents and scholarly works rounds out our agenda.

Yes, this class will require motivation, commitment, and planning.  But in return, you will mature as a student and as a citizen.  Welcome to sophomore year at Signature School, and to AP World History.
