Course Descriptions Ð Math Studies is intended to be a two-year course of study with both an external and internal assessment piece during year two.  The aims of these courses are to enable students to:

 

¯    Develop mathematical knowledge, concepts and principles

¯    Develop logical, critical and creative thinking

¯    Employ and refine their powers of abstraction and generalization.

 

The course concentrates on mathematics that can be applied to contexts related as far as possible to other subjects being studied, to common real-world occurrences and to topics that relate to home, work and leisure situations.

Grading Scale


A Ð (100% - 90%)

B Ð (89% - 80%)

C Ð (79% - 70%)

D Ð (69% - 60%)

F Ð (below 60%)


Grading Categories - 

 

1.    Tests Ð Tests will count 100 pts. We will generally have a test at the end of each chapter, but longer chapters may have two.

 

2.    Quizzes Ð Quizzes will count 25 points each.  We will try to have a number of quizzes throughout the year.  Quizzes will be used to determine classroom pacing and identify chapter weaknesses.

 

3.    Homework- Homework sheets will be posted to the website at the beginning of each chapter.  Students will be expected to keep up on assignments on their own pace.  Assignments will be collected the next class period and will be graded on completeness. Each HW section will count for 5 point.

 

Mid-Term (Project/Exam) Ð The project will count as 10% of your overall midterm grade, and the midterm will count as the other 10% of your midterm grade. Students will also be encouraged to submit their projects to the USI Science Fair.

 

End of Year Assessment Ð Students will be expected to sit for the Math Studies exam at the end of the year.  Students who sit for the exam at the end of the year will not have to take the end of year final.
