A Signature Summer
Summer is fast approaching and Signature School has collected information about various creative, challenging and exciting summer programs to make the 2008 summer fantastic! Listed below are a variety of opportunities and experiences that are sure to excite Signature students. Basic information about each event is listed below with links to corresponding websites that provide additional information about the events.
Note: Be sure to take a look at the Deadline and Required sections of each event to ensure that you meet the deadlines and obtain all the materials necessary for each event.


EXPLORE-A-COLLEGE
Where: Earlham College (Richmond, Indiana)
What: A college-level summer program for high school students that allows them to take a class for two college credits, live in a dorm, study hard, and play a lot! Classes are available in art, humanities, languages, natural sciences, & social sciences. (see website for information on classes available)
Who: High school students in grades 9, 10, & 11
When: June 22 - July 5, 2008
Deadline: Application deadline is May 23, 2008
Required: An essay, letter of recommendation from both your guidance counselor & a teacher, deposit & an official transcript.
Cost: $1,600 (covers tuition, room/board, two semester hours of college credit)

YOUNG WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
Where: Indiana University's Kelley School of Business (Bloomington, Indiana)
What: An opportunity for current female high school juniors to learn about career options in the field of business, as well as explore the Indiana University campus.
Who: High-achieving female high school juniors
When: June 1-6 & June 8-13
Deadline: March 30
Required: Minimum GPA of 3.5/4.0, short essay, letter of recommendation & a high school transcript.
Cost: Program is free, participants must provide transportation to Bloomington and personal spending money.

ANNUAL SUMMER ART WORKSHOP
Where: Murray State University (Murray, Kentucky)
What: Murray State University's Department of Art is hosting its 48th Annual Summer Art Workshop. As one of the most intensive and effective summer workshops of its kind in the region, the workshop will focus on both drawing and printmaking.
Who: Students in grades 10, 11, & 12
When: June 8-13

SUMMER ACADEMY IN APPLIED SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (SAAST)
Where: University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering & Applied Science (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)
What: A unique program for a selective group of high school students to experience rigorous and challenging college-level coursework. This 3-week program combines sophisticated theory with hands-on practical experience in cutting-edge technologies. (Students can earn college credit in Biotechnology, Computer Graphics, Computer Science, Nanotechnology, Robotics, & Technology and Development - see website for more information.)

WOMEN IN ENGINEERING PROGRAM
EDGE: EXCITING DISCOVERIES FOR GIRLS IN ENGINEERING
Where: Purdue University (West Lafayette, Indiana)
What: A summer residential camp giving high school women the opportunity to apply their imagination and creativity to hands-on projects with a small team of fellow campers, the chance to discover how their unique talents and interests can lead to an exciting engineering career, and the opportunity to spend a day submersed in one specific engineering discipline of their choice.
Who: High school female students who have completed grades 9 & 10

HIGH SCHOOL HONORS & SUMMER CHALLENGE
Where: Boston University (Boston, Massachusetts)
What: High School Honors: A six-week residential program in which students can either take two Boston University undergraduate courses, earning up to eight credits, or conduct scientific research under the guidance of a faculty mentor (no credit).
Summer Challenge: A two-week residential program offering students the opportunity to enroll in two non-credit seminars encompassing many different topics. The Summer Challenge Program is ideal for students who wish to explore college-level work without the pressure of grades.

Where: Vanderbilt University (Nashville, Tennessee)
What: Two- and three-week sessions each featuring challenging courses taught in university classrooms and laboratories by Vanderbilt faculty and graduate students.
Who: Session II (two weeks): Students entering grades 9 & 10; Session III (three weeks): Students entering grades 10, 11 & 12

HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER SCHOLARS PROGRAM
Where: Washington University in St. Louis (St. Louis, Missouri)
What: A five-week view of college life including the opportunity to earn college credit and choose your own classes in the following areas: foreign languages, the sciences, the humanities, the arts & the social sciences.
Who: Students who are at least 16 years old and a current high school junior (entering their senior year).
When: Session I: June 8 - July 12; Session II: July 13 - August 15
Deadline: Session I: May 2; Session II: June 6
Required: An academic average of a B+ or better & combined SAT score of at least 1800, combined PSAT score of 180, or a composite ACT or PLAN score of at least 25

ACADEMIC TREKS/BROADREACH
Where: All over the world!
What: Academic Treks offers college-accredited summer adventures abroad for high school students. Academic Treks combines experiential learning, traditional classroom learning and service learning with wilderness adventure, international travel and cultural exchange to create extraordinary expeditions. Broadreach offers experiential summer adventures for teenagers including scuba, sailing, multi-sport and wilderness programs that span the globe.
Who: There are programs for every age group.
When: June & July. The programs last for various periods of time - most lasting between 20-22 days.
Deadline: ASAP - time is very limited

2008 SUMMER SESSIONS
Where: Indiana University Bloomington
What: The Indiana University Bloomington summer program is one of the country's oldest and largest, traditionally offering over 1,200 classes between two main summer sessions, in addition to numerous specially scheduled summer programs, workshops & seminars.

When: First Summer Session: May 6 - June 12; Second Summer Session: June 13 - August 8, 2008
