Purdue Scholarship Opportunities and Teacher Nominations
Purdue University's Purdue Opportunity Awards (POA) scholarship and support program is starting to recruit for our 2008 first-year college students - our newest group of POA scholars! Designed to provide not just scholarship money, the program goes the extra mile by providing the personal academic support that students need to succeed at Purdue University. Purdue Opportunity Awards (POA) are granted to students who otherwise might not be able to consider Purdue University as an option due to high financial need. There is at least one award for each of Indiana's 92 counties.
We have simplified the Purdue Opportunity Awards nomination process for 2008-09.
Nominating a student involves a simple two step process:
- Encourage students to APPLY for admission to Purdue University AND complete the Preliminary Financial Aid Estimate (PFAE is the last part of the admissions application) BEFORE December 1,2007. Visit our website for an online Undergraduate Admissions application:www.purdue.edu/futureboilermaker/applying/download_app.shtml.
- Nominators can also forward the following to poa@purdue.edu
- Full name (first, middle and last) of prospective POA scholars
- Name of High School (including nominator's name)
- Mailing contact info - an address that is most "permanent" or viable for the student. High school address is OK.
Feel free to pass this along to fellow colleagues and educators. We hope to have more detailed information on our 2008 Purdue Opportunity Awards program to all Indiana high schools shortly. Feel free to visit our website for more information about our program www.purdue.edu/SATS/poa/. If you have any questions, please let us know.
Thank you for your support of our program!

IB and AP Policy
Every university has the flexibility to make their own decisions about policies pertaining to which AP scores they will accept for college credit. They also have policies related to IB diplomas and credits granted for exams taken for IB higher level (HL) and standard level (SL) courses. Students and parents should research the two following sites to educate themselves on the various university policies when deciding between the IB program and AP courses and their corresponding exams.

The selection committee will look at high school GPA and rank, range and depth of academic courses taken, SAT and ACT scores, special academic honors and awards, unusual personal qualities as indicated by extracurricular activities, community service, or independent initiatives in any area, plus exceptional talent in a specific area.
The profile of recent classes with Wells Scholars are as follows: (please keep in mind these are averages) GPA of 3.9 or higher, critical reading and math SAT of 1430+, most were in the top 5% of their graduating class.

Todays Woman Scholarship
Please let your students know the following: This scholarship is due very, very soon!!!!
Four 5,000 scholarships will be awarded to area students. This requires a completed application (located in Dr. Gibson's office), a transcript, two letters of recommendation and a personal essay. Topic: Why you are currently attending college and what experiences you are having OR your career objectives and goals for the future. The application also asks for your financial status and for any unusual circumstances you may have had that affected your achievement in school, work experiences or school or community participation.
The latter part of this scholarship application would lead me to believe these scholarships are based upon need and geared toward those students who have or are overcoming obstacles toward their goals.
The deadline for all material is Sept. 7th to the Evansville Courier and Press.
