Speech Team Academic Eligibility
Updated 06.20.07

Signature School prides itself on academic rigor, and the staff emphasizes scholastic excellence as a foundation of the school. As members of the Speech Team, students are expected to represent the school with mature, professional behavior while at meets. In addition, they are expected to be leaders in the classroom. For this reason, Speech Team members have a responsibility to keep their grades at a certain level.

Students are expected to maintain a 2.0 grade-point average to be eligible to participate in Speech practices and attend tournaments. The coach will check PowerSchool on a weekly basis to monitor progress.

If a student has below a 2.0:
• The student will not attend practices or meets until the grades improve.

If a student is failing a class:
• The coach reserves the right to suspend a student from practices or meets until the grade improves.

This policy is not about punishing students; it is about ensuring student success. Speech meets can consume an entire Saturday or an entire weekend, and most students find speech meets a challenging atmosphere for studying. The Speech Team is a positive extra-curricular for high school students, but it is a large time commitment and grades come first. If you have any questions about this policy, please contact Coach Erin Atkinson at erin.atkinson@signature.edu or 421-1820.
