Helpful Hints using Microsoft Word in Office 2003

 

How to Double Space

  1. Highlight Text
  2. Go to Format à Paragraph à Under line spacing, select DOUBLE.

Or, you can hit CONTROL-A and then CONTROL-2.

Or, you can select the line spacing icon on the toolbar. It is generally next to the line numbering button, with vertical arrows next to horizontal lines.

 

How to remove hyperlink (web sites that turn blue and are underlined)

  1. Highlight the Web address.
  2. Right-click with your mouse.
  3. Choose REMOVE HYPERLINK.

 

How to adjust the margins

  1. Go to FILE à Page Setup.
  2. Change the left and right margins to 1” – the default is 1.25”
  3. Click OK.

 

How to add header and page numbers

  1. Select VIEW à Header and Footer.
  2. Type your header in the box.
  3. Move it to the right side using the alignment icons on the toolbar
  4. Then add page numbers. Click on the icon with the #

 

Grammar help from Microsoft Word

  1. Go to TOOLS. Click on OPTIONS.
  2. Click on the Spelling & Grammar tab. Under the Grammar section, click on the
  3. ‘Settings’ bar (it is under the Writing Style section toward the bottom of the box).
  4. Now, scroll down on that menu. Under STYLE, you can select contractions, fragments, first person, and other grammar issues. Microsoft Word will underline these items in red.

 

Remember that Microsoft Word will indent paragraphs for you. Resist hitting an extra ‘tab’ if the program already is indenting new paragraphs.

 

If you get stuck and your writing gets in a strange format, wrong font, or you have problems with tabs, highlight the text and go to the toolbar where it says ‘normal.’ This should be next to the font name.

Click on the drop down box and select clear formatting. This will allow you to re-style the text the way you want it.
