Prom Safety

by: Jarred Morris and Kushang Vashi

With prom coming up on April 19th, one of the main concerns is prom safety. Although prom is a time for students to enjoy with their friends and others, students must be cautious of their outer surroundings. Some of the main concerns of prom include staying away from alcohol/drugs, who the students go with, and how long they stay at prom. In order for prom to be successful on April 19th, one must follow these safety procedures that are listed below. Although rules may be boring and annoying, these rules can have a significant impact to a fun or disastrous night.

Some tips for parents on how to make sure their children are safe during prom are to:

  • Talk to your kids before prom
  • Make sure to have your child's phone number and the number of the person your child is riding with

Some tips for students on how to be safe are:

  • Follow rules that are outlined by parents such as curfew
  • If the person you are going with is going to a party with drugs, don't go with them to after-prom
  • Make the right choices to be safe
  • Don't drink and drive
  • Choose the right prom dress so people don't make fun of you
  • STAY AWAY FROM THE PUNCH BOWL!
  • Watch Prom Night

In preparation for prom on April 19th, seniors Betsy Whited and Charles Baker gave their advice on how to stay safe for prom. Charles Baker says, "Stay safe and don't be stupid." Betsy Whited says, "Use common sense and don't make decisions in haste." Seniors Savannah Maxey and Amanda Harris, and junior Chris Brace also gave their advice for prom safety. Chris Brace said, "Don't do drugs or alcohol." Senior Savannah Maxey said, "Don't be stupid, stay with a group that you trust and have fun" and senior Amanda Harris said, "Don't surround yourself with others who are not going to after prom."

As said by most of the students, it is very important to be safe during prom. In order to be safe during prom, one must use his/her own judgment to make the right decisions. On April 19th 2008, proper decision making can be the key to an eventful night.
