Prom is coming up, and we all know we're going to have to follow the rules. School rules apply for all extracurricular activities, and if you think you need to be refreshed, click here... Otherwise, keep reading for the Alex Levine and Laura Deig version of Peer Social Etiquette for the Promenade of '08.
- Don't be a hussy!
First of all, cover yourself up. No one wants to be distracted by your assets during the dance-and if they do, they should be ashamed of themselves.
- Don't be a wallflower.
Listen, this is Sig. We take care of our own. No one is going to make fun of you for jamming on the dance floor, no matter how ridiculous you look. We promise. Especially for you seniors out there, this is your last chance to work it at prom. Don't sit by yourself the whole time, or you might regret it when it's too late. If you're ever by yourself, Alexander Aston Zapata wants to remind you to "go find the Columbian-I'm a guaranteed dance partner."
- Don't be too scandalous.
We like to dance as much as the next person, but honestly, if you came to Prom to be promiscuous, you came for the wrong reasons. Remember, you're not trying to make money-you're trying to have fun.
- Don't steal other people's dates.
It's good to dance with a variety of people at Prom. However, be conscious of date stealing. Don't dance with someone's man three times in a row-that's cold. Some good ideas are swapping couples for a dance, or dancing in a large group of friends to avoid the predicament completely.
- Don't refuse the classics.
When "Pour Some Sugar on Me" starts, you better start singing. When the Carlton Dance gets going, you better "jump on it." The cha-cha slide may be cheesy, but it's a classic. Just remember that when you go to the floor, nobody wants to see a hiked up dress and booty showing… keep it clean, kids.
- Slow your roll on the slow songs.
Slow songs aren't an excuse for a vertical formal wear hook-up-be respectful to those around you. No one wants to experience that unpleasant feeling of enjoying a slow song only to turn around and realize that the couple behind you is making out… awkward!
Mrs. Pate says that "nothing's really gone wrong at any Sig Proms I've been to. Everyone just had a good time." Since at Signature we're not really concerned about whether or not you'll follow the school rules, just remember to follow our suggestions for Peer Social Etiquette this year at Prom.
