The upcoming primaries, with the presidential election soon to follow may be the most controversial in the history of American government. Whichever candidate wins the democratic primaries will still be a historical event.
Barack Obama is an Illinois senator running for the democratic candidate for president. During one of his speeches he said, "That is why, in the shadow of the Old State Capitol, where Lincoln once called on a house divided to stand together, where common hopes and common dreams still live, I stand before you today to announce my candidacy for President of the United States of America ." He is the first black candidate running for president. He is trying to avoid negative campaigning in his run for president. When asked why he chose to run now, Obama said, "I am running now because of what Dr. Martin Luther King called the 'fierce urgency of now'…I think there is such a thing of being too late. And that hour is nearly upon us…Our nation is at war. Our planet is in peril…I am in this fight for you to give a voice to you, to champion your cause. But I can't do it myself…I don’t want to just end the war. I want to end the mindset that got us into the war. I will bring this war to an end in 2009.." He has taken an overall delegate lead over his adversary, Hilary Clinton. He believes that if he is elected that he will make true changes in Washington and not be hindered by petty partisanship.
Hilary Clinton is an New York senator running for the democratic candidate for president. She is the first female candidate to run for the office of president. She had this to say about representing the females of America , "In to many instances, the march to globalization has also meant the marginalization of women and girls. And that must change." She is very determined to win her campaign as she stated in her announcement, she stated, "I'm in. And I'm in to win." Mrs. Clinton takes a very strong stance in what she believes concerning what's best for the American people as she states here. "We must stop thinking of the individual and start thinking about what is best for society".
With such a controversial election on the horizon, many people have varied opinions about it. When asked about the outcome of the presidential campaign, Becky Fortner had this to say "If Hilary wins the primary then McCain will win the overall election, but if Obama wins the primary then he will win the election." Mallory Foster believes "Obama will attract the younger voters while Clinton will be more popular among the older voters." Joey Ferris is quite certain "Obama is going to pull it off in the primaries." Though opinions may differ, no one can dispute that this election will be one for the history books.
