Facebook/MySpace issues

by: Kirsten Robards

If your parents watch the news or if you do, you probably have heard all the negative things about MySpace or Facebook, and how you shouldn't join them because they are dangerous. According to a story on msnbc.com, "It's a social networking sites - sort of a cyber combination of a yearbook, personal diary and social club. The biggest of them is MySpace.com. With more than 50 million members, it is one of the fastest growing Web sites in the country." Which is what Myspace is, but there are things people should be cautious of when having a MySpace or Facebook.

If you choose to have a Facebook or MySpace it is all about your choices. "I think it is safe to an extent but I keep it vague," said junior Dana Widick. You can choose who your friends are, you can choose who leaves you a comment, what kind of pictures you are putting up of yourself, and you can choose whether you message someone you don't know. Also, on top of everything, you decide what kind of information you let the public see such as where you go school, your age, or your full name. There is a negative side to having a MySpace and Facebook which is you can't always control what people say or put up about you. But you just need to be careful with having a MySpace or Facebook. "[Facebook and MySpace] make it easy for you to make it safe. I don't think there are as many predators as people think there is," said senior Morgan Devine.

Having a Facebook and a Myspace is part of our generation its fun and it is a form of communication. Just be safe with the choices you make with Facebook and Myspace and don't add anyone you don't know. Also, don't run off with some thirty-year old man or woman. Just be smart when having a MySpace or Facebook.
