Valentine's Day for Singles
by: Lindsay Witte
Ah, yes, it's that time of year again... time for the dreaded Valentine's Day, a.k.a. "Singles Awareness Day" as some call it. For many, February 14th means store-bought valentine's and candy hearts. BLAH! BLAH! BLAH! For us singles, it's just one more reminder of JUST HOW SINGLE WE ARE! But don't get to down, I've got some advice, creative ideas, and others singles opinions on how to make this V-day your best!
Never know what to do on a Valentine's night? Instead of staying home being a bum, here are some ideas to get your mind off of the cliche that "being single" has become:
1. Give thanks for your former boyfriends or girlfriends. These people are the ones that made you who you are now.
2. Celebrate love in your life. Enjoy time spent with your loved ones and celebrate with your family and friends. Send Valentine's Day e-cards and postal cards to people you care about and spread some love and joy.
3. Don't spend the night alone. Go out with your single friends, go to dinner, or go play cards.
4. Treat yourself. A massage and a manicure or pedicure is relaxing and a treat for you!
When interviewed, some of our own Sig singles told us how they will be celebrating, or lack there of, this Valentine's Day. Emily Brunson, a sophomore, said "No, I enjoy every minute of it" when asked if Valentine's Day annoyed her. She doesn't think the Valentine's Day is too overrated because she likes "pink and pretty things" that remind her of the holiday, while Amy Francis, another sophomore, said she thinks "everyone makes such a big deal of it all." Francis also said that she doesn't always acknowledge V-day, "it's just another day for me." Our last interview was with Samantha Keeling, she thought "people get way too excited on Valentine's Day." She said she just "hangs out with friends and goes on regularly."
Don't make this Valentine's Day a bad one. Get out, have fun, and be you! Love can happen in the most unusual places.
