Super Bowl

The Super Bowl has been an important time in history since the first game 41 years ago. The first super bowl was on Jan. 15, 1967 at Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California. It was between the Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers. The Packers won with a final score of 35 to 10.

NFL Commissioner Pete Roselle wanted to call the game "The Big One". AFL founder and Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt had jokingly referred to the league's championship as the "Super Bowl". Hunt thought of the name after seeing his kids playing with a toy called a Super Ball. The ball is now on display at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. The name was consistent with college football games which had long been known as "bowl games". Nevertheless, the name "Super Bowl" became permanent.

Sophomore, Charlotte Roth, wants the Giants to win. She plans on watching it "at home with [her] family". Like most people in her age group she has "never heard of" Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. When asked her favorite part of the game, Roth said, "If I don't like the teams, my favorite part is the commercials, but if I like the teams playing, the game is fun".

Briana Pfettscher, a junior, also wants the Giants to win. She thinks they have a good chance of winning because "they have made it this far". Her Super Bowl plans include "either going to [her] friend Brittani's house or to [her] aunt and uncle's house". She loves "the game, commercials, and spending time and having fun" with her family. Like Roth, Pfettscher has "never heard of" Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Super Bowl XLII was on February 3, 2008 at the University of Phoenix stadium in Glendale, Arizona. New England Patriots competed against the New York Giants. The half time show was provided by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. With thirty seconds left in the game, Eli Manning made a pass to Plaxico Burress for the game winning touchdown. The final score was Giants 17- Patriots 14.

Junior, Matt Winenger, began his interview by saying "I am a Giants fan because the Patriots [stink]." Winenger went to The Place, located at a Presbyterian church, to watch the game. While there, he "played ping-pong and watch[ed] the game in HD". His favorite moment was "when Eli Manning was about to get sacked by eight people, made the pass and it was complete". Winenger liked watching Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers; he thinks "Tom Petty rocks, but he's old". Winenger also "liked the Budlight commercials" exclaiming "the guy was on fire!"

Tyler White had the Davis family, the Martin family, and Abby Redman at his house and they "had Italian food. It was delicious". White wanted the Giants to win saying, "I hate the Patriots. They're not a classy team. And Eli Manning, well, he's a Manning and that's all I have to say about that". White's favorite play was where "David Tyree caught [the ball] on top of his helmet". This was also Sam Barnett's favorite play. Barnett watched the Super Bowl at home with his parents.

Ryan Terry said,"I stayed at my house with my brother. We had pigs in a blanket". Terry liked the "second to last play of the game when Tom Brady got sacked and it looked like he got bent in half".

On a more pleasant note, sophomore Amy Francis liked "when they showed Peyton Manning up there cheering on his brother. It was heartwarming".
