The Sounds of Spring are Awakening
... At the Civic Theatre.
by: Becky Fortner
There is an ignored silence between most parents and their teens. Some things are just too awkward to talk about: sex, religion suicide, homosexuality, abortion. That is exactly what Spring Awakening throws into the light of the stage.
It is the story of a group of teens going through the toughest time of their young lives: puberty. Their parents don't understand, school is just too much to handle, and life just doesn't make sense.
Melchior Gabor, played by Andrew Baum, is "sarcastic and doesn't take much seriously". His laid back outtake on life and the events happening in the world around him get him into trouble.
Never far behind Melchior is his best friend Moritz Stiefl, played by Nick Wentzel. "Moritz is obsessed with school", which puts a lot of pressure on him and leads him down a dark spiral.
Wendela Bergmann, played by Katie Glaser is "a young innocent-esque girl" whose mother has done all she can to keep her a little girl.
Ilse, played by both Sara Hoskins and Laura Reinicke, is a bohemian, hippie, woman of easy virtue. She's "one of the more put together characters" and has more world experience.
Joined by their friends; Martha who is constantly abused by her parents, Ernst and Hanchen who are hiding their love for one another, Thea who is afraid to grow up, and many more; Spring Awakening creates an emotional roller coaster that one will not soon forget.
Come see the emotional battle between mind and heart unravel!
